Corporate giving in Pakistan is estimated at RS. 30 billion in years 2021 & 2022
|
The contribution of Pakistan's business sector to support social causes has been
significant as billions of rupees are spent to help needy people in different
areas. PCP annually conducts a Corporate Philanthropy Survey (CPS) to reckon its
Philanthropic donations and presents awards to top giving companies in
recognition of their CSR activities.
PCP launched the CPS reports for the years 2021 and 2022 to disseminate their
findings to various stakeholders. The reports can be downloaded here:

Corporate
philanthropy awards 2023
|
To
acknowledge the contributions of the corporate sector to society, PCP presents
awards to top giving companies each year. This year an award ceremony was held
at the launch of the reports on 7th March 2023 in Marriott Hotel, Karachi. Mr.
Akif Saeed, Chairman SECP, graced the occasion. More than 50 representatives of
different companies, media personnel and board members of PCP attended the
event. Awards were presented to the top 3 giving Public Listed, Public Unlisted
and Private Limited companies on the basis of their highest volume of donation
and as a percentage of PBT. |

Mr. Akif Saeed appreciated the role of PCP in documenting and highlighting
philanthropic work of the corporate sector and encouraged all participating
company representatives to continue and augment the good work they are doing.

Panel
discussion on disaster philanthropy
|
In view of the recent flood disaster and its adverse effects on millions of
people, a panel discussion was also held at corporate philanthropy awards event
to review and unpack the role of NPOs and corporate sector in times of disaster,
and how philanthropy can be a mean to mitigate the adversities of crisis |

Dr. Amjad Saqib, Founder and Executive Director Akhuwat, was the key note
speaker along with other esteemed panelists from the corporate and nonprofit
organizations including Senator(r) Javed Jabbar, Chairman SPO and Founding
President Baanhn Beli, Mr. Esfandyar Baloch, CEO PPHI Baluchistan, Mr. Mushtaq
Kassim Chhapra, Chairman The Citizens Foundation, and Mr. Muhammad Aurangzeb,
President & CEO Habib Bank Limited. |

A session
with Punjab based HNIs
|
For our decennial study on the state of philanthropy in Pakistan, PCP Research
Team had a session with Punjab based high net-worth individuals (HNIs) to
understand their motivations and preferences for charitable giving. |
|
The session was intended to expand the horizon of the research, and obtain a
holistic snapshot of philanthropic giving in the country. |

article in the newspaper |
The article titled
"The culture of giving in Pakistan"
was published in the Daily Dawn on January 30, 2023. The article highlights that
philanthropy is a cultural norm in Pakistan, making the country one of the most
charitable giving nations in the world. Religion and compassion are strong
motivating factors for giving, indicating that Pakistanis prefer to donate
primarily to needy individuals and to mosques or madrassas.

Doing good
index (DGI) 2024 workshop |
Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society (CAPS) conducts an annual DGI
that examines the enabling environment for philanthropy across Asia. From
Pakistan, PCP has been their country partner since 2020. Now with DGI 2024 in
line, CAPS convened partners’ workshop in Thailand in which PCP was represented
by its research lead.
We look forward to strengthening this partnership and achieving greater
milestones together. |

A survey of
small traders in Pakistan |
As
part of the large study on “State of Philanthropy”, a survey of small traders’
was conducted in seven major business markets, including Joria Bazar and Bolton
Markets in Karachi, Anarkali Bazar in Lahore, Raja Bazar in Rawalpindi, Clock
Tower in Faisalabad, Qasakhani Bazar in Peshawar, and Bara Bazar in Quetta.
The objective is to assess the volume of philanthropic contributions of small
traders, and their motivations for giving. Data collection started on February
22nd and was completed before March 15th, 2023, which will be analyzed to
examine the patterns of giving in the business sector.

PCP, the body approved by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for the
certification of nonprofit entities in Pakistan, has granted certification
approval to as many as 72 organizations from January to March 2023.

35th
mid-career management course (MCMC) of IRS officers
|
PCP was invited to deliver a session at 35th Mid-Career Management Course (MCMC)
of Inland Revenue Service (IRS) officers. Since PCP's NPO Certification and
various nonprofit tax matters are mutually inclusive, our Executive Director
along with Manager NPO Certification interacted with trainees, and gave a broad
introduction of PCP, its certification program and regulatory landscape for NPOs
including tax related matters. |

PCP makes it essential to lend advocacy services and advice in raising awareness
regarding philanthropy, which is why it is always at the forefront to
collaborate with key stakeholders and players in the philanthropy sector of the
country.

Meeting with
the chief commissioner regional tax office (RTO) Hyderabad
|
PCP's
Executive Director and Manager NPO Certification had a meeting with the Chief
Commissioner Regional Tax Office (RTO) Hyderabad. Being a designated
Certification Agency by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), PCP's management
ensures to touch base with the RTOs often to highlight tax related matters
regarding NPOs and to further add value to the PCP's NPO Certification Process. |

Hyderabad

Mithi
based NPOs
|
PCP had sessions with the NPOs based in
Hyderabad and
Mithi on Jan
24th and Jan 25th respectively. The discussion revolved around the matters that
are pertinent to NPOs including PCP Certification, NPO-specific taxation
matters, and an insight on how to use PCP Certification to attract individual
and corporate donors.
PCP, as per its mandate, has always made efforts to bridge the knowledge gap,
and we look forward to holding such exercises in the future as well. |

Training
workshop on legal and regulatory framework of NGOs
|
Social Welfare Training Institute (SWTI) Lahore has recently organized a one day
training workshop on Legal and Regulatory Framework of NGOs - Accounting and
Taxation Perspective. PCP was invited to present its certification model around
governance, financial management and program delivery for nonprofits registered
with social welfare department and other government authorities. We appreciate
SWTI for organizing this much needed training, and look forward to extending our
due assistance in the future as well. |

Making partnerships and grant-making more efficient

PCP, SDPI sign MoU to strengthen social delivery service in Pakistan
|
PCP and
Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) have
signed a MoU which aims at promoting the collaboration between the two in the
sector of philanthropy. Through this, we look forward to working together and
fostering an enabling environment for our nonprofit sector. |

Training on taxation and regulatory compliance for NPOs
|
Congratulations to all the participants of the Karachi batch of our training on
taxation and regulatory compliance for NPOs.
This training is an ongoing activity for this year, and our aim is to reach out
to all the NPOs and facilitate them with the necessary knowledge on taxation and
regulatory compliance. |

Continuation of the academic course on philanthropy in its third consecutive
year
|
PCP,
in collaboration with SZABIST Islamabad, piloted an academic course titled
"Introduction to Philanthropy" in the Fall Semester of 2021. Keeping in view the
success of the course and active interest of the students in learning about
philanthropy, the course has been extended to the spring semester of 2023. The
module of the course consists of both theoretical and practical knowledge, to
give youth a holistic snapshot of the concept to understand its significance |

PCP’s
visit of Thar Foundation
|
PCP management was invited to visit the interventions of Thar Foundation, the
CSR arm of Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC). Thar Foundation is working
on a diverse range of sustainable development initiatives from education, and
health to livelihood and interfaith harmony. |

Philanthropy
in
Pakistan is
unsurmountable. Pakistanis, both rich and poor, give open heartedly under
various motivations, religion being the topmost.
During the month of
Ramadan, a
surge in giving is witnessed as people donate more and more in the form of
Zakat and
Fitrana. One
of the key activities of PCP is to research and document this quantum of giving
in the country.
