Philanthropy is experiencing rapid growth, expanding in scale and complexity like never before, and is increasingly recognized as a vital aspect of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda. The Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy (PCP), through its research efforts, offers updated insights into the extent of charitable giving across various forms and investigates the patterns and motivations driving philanthropic actions. These research findings affirm that philanthropic contributions represent a significant potential resource to complement government efforts for social development within the country.

The national-level study, Giving Pakistan, aims to present a comprehensive overview of the trends and patterns of charitable giving in Pakistan, highlighting how contributions from diverse sources are utilized by recipients to positively impact people’s lives, embodying the essence of philanthropy. This will also serve as a foundation for assessing the total volume of giving and its proportionate share in the GDP. This groundbreaking study will include:

  1. Estimating the total volume of charitable giving in Pakistan and its relative contribution to the country’s GDP.
  2. Analyzing trends and patterns in philanthropic giving to inform business leaders, policymakers, civil society organizations, international agencies, foundations, and the government about the sector.
  3. Exploring the impacts of charitable giving to gain deeper insights into the dynamics of philanthropy and its role in facilitating informed decisions for social development.
  4. Highlighting best practices and global benchmarks to recognize Pakistan as a ‘Giving Nation

Dr. Adil Najam, a Pakistani academic who also serves as the President of WWF and is the Dean of the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, leads this project as the principal investigator.
